The hors catégorie Col de la Croix de Fer (24 km at an average gradient of 5.2%) was followed by the first-category Col du Télégraphe (11.9 km at an average gradient of 7.1%), the hors catégorie Col du Galibier (17.7 km at an average gradient of 6.9%, with the summit at an elevation of 2,642 m (8,668 ft)), and the hors catégorie Col de Sarenne (12.8 km at an average gradient of 7.3%), before an uncategorised ascent to the finish at Alpe d'Huez (3.7 km at an average gradient of 6.2%).
