Australia’s Lucas Herbert holds the 36-hole lead at 8-under par after an incredible, record-tying second round at the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. Herbert matched the lowest single-round score in men's major championship history by shooting an 8-under 62, which included a historic 6-under 28 on the front nine. American Sam Burns also carded an 8-under 62 later in the day, holing out from a greenside bunker on the 18th to surge up the standings. Bryson DeChambeau was handed a controversial two-stroke penalty after the conclusion of his second round at the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, dropping him from 7-under par to 5-under par overall. He initially carded a stellar 4-under 66 to sit just one shot off the lead, but R&A officials docked him two shots after reviewing an incident on the 5th hole, retroactively changing his round to a 2-under 68. DeChambeau hit a wayward drive into the thick fescue grass on the par-4 5th hole. Before hitting his second shot, he walked around his ball and took heavy steps, which R&A officials later determined inadvertently improved his lie and backswing path.
