The race remained in Spain for the second stage, with a 168.5 km (104.7 mi) course from Tarragona to Barcelona, culminating with three laps of a finishing circuit on the Montjuïc hill above Barcelona. The stage featured four categorised climbs, the second-category Côte de Begues and three ascents of the Côte du Château de Montjuïc (1.6 km at an average gradient of 9.3%). The finish was located at the top of an uncategorised climb in Montjuïc, 700 metres in length with an average gradient of 7%.
