The final event of the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia season commenced at The National Golf Club on the Mornington Peninsula. The primary challenge for the field on the Gunnamatta Course was a brutal combination of high winds and persistent rain, described by some veterans as the most difficult conditions they had faced in their careers. For the 108-player field, the objective was to survive the elements and secure a strong position in the Order of Merit, which determines playing rights for the following season. Strategically, the first round was a test of "survival golf" rather than scoring. The objective for the early and late starters alike was to minimize damage, as the coastal winds made club selection nearly impossible on the more exposed holes of the Tom Doak layout. With the top 50 in the Order of Merit hanging in the balance for many, the tactical priority was keeping the ball low and avoiding the treacherous sandy scrub. As the worst of the weather battered the course, the goal shifted from birdie hunting to simply finishing the round with the card intact.
