The second round at The National Golf Club’s Gunnamatta Course served as a high-stakes "Cut Day" on the Mornington Peninsula. While the extreme wind and rain of the opening round subsided slightly, the coastal breezes remained a formidable defense for the Tom Doak layout. For overnight leader Josh Armstrong, the objective was to prove his opening 68 wasn't a fluke of the draw and to extend his lead over a veteran chasing pack. For many others, the goal was survival, as the top 50 in the Order of Merit—and the guaranteed playing rights that come with it—rested on making the weekend. Strategically, Round 2 required a balance of aggression and caution. The objective for the field was to capitalize on the scorable par-5s while avoiding the deep sandy blowouts that penalize wayward drives. With the greens beginning to dry and speed up, the tactical priority shifted to precise approach shots, as missing on the high side of the undulations left nearly impossible recovery putts. As the afternoon groups finished, the goal for those on the bubble was to squeeze inside the cut line to keep their 2026/2027 season dreams alive.
